I have a morbid desire to see them go over the cliff too, because perhaps that will finally be what it takes for the wheels to finally come off the GOP and the party will be forced to either reform or break apart.  But I'm getting so tired of waiting.  It always seemed that the GOP is living on borrowed time, but the huge internal contradictions never quite seem to result in the sort of massive public repudiation required to get the politically unengaged, habitual GOP voters in the suburbs and exurbs to abandon the party to the Christianists and assorted other fools.  It will take a really massive miscalculation on the part of the GOP and a whole lot of pain before that will happen.  At this point in time, I almost hope they do something massively stupid that boomerangs on them.  Will it be worth the pain?  Who knows... and the lack of predictability is the only thing that gives me pause.
