all the stats, coupled with this, point to an AWB being DOA:

Asked about the proximate causes of gun violence (aided response), overwhelming majorities –– from 69% to 83% –– point to the easy availability of guns and lax enforcement of existing laws, such as mandatory background checks.
enforce what's already on the books, fund BATF and give it a damned director already. heh

even the support for banning "assault weapons" topped out at 58%, whatever this survey, or its respondents, meant by "assault weapons."

    •  That's an absurd conclusion. (3+ / 0-)

Granted, most Americans don't know the granular details of what is and what is not an assault weapon. And what of it?

But I'd warrant that the majority of Americans that does not own guns also has little patience for linguistic hair-splitting like this, not only because it seems small when they're considering shot-to-bits toddlers, but also because that majority is sick and tired of hearing the same lame excuses and obfuscations every time there's a massacre.

I'm sorry, Cedwyn, and this is not personal, but there's been a sea change in this debate.

They're not "assault weapons"; just call them "Freedom Sparklers".

      •  yes, a sea change (4+ / 0-)

but if one is thinking of the VA Tech shooter's guns when expressing support for an "assault weapons ban," the numbers are a tad off.  because that gun wouldn't be touched by an AWB.  it's a handgun.  even banning semi-auto handguns topped out at 51% support.  not winning numbers given the composition of congress right now.

so it is not linguistic hair-splitting to address these points, not by a long shot.  it matters, because the text of any legislation will be that specific.  like DiFi's AWB specifically exempting some 900 models of guns.

and that's the point:  if support for an ill-defined "assault weapons" ban in some poll tops out at 58%, one has to start looking at the realpolitik of the situation; could a not-toothless AWB get past the GOP house, even in the current climate? no way in hell, especially if it splits the left.

DiFi's AWB calls for a national firearms registry.  fuggedaboutit.  her AWB would likely face constitutional challenges and injunctions.  given all of that, and that the guns addressed by an AWB account for a maximum of 2% of gun violence, it hardly seems like a good hill to die on.

        •  You do realize (3+ / 0-)

that you're making an argument for outright gun confiscation, right? If what you say translates as "nothing to be done", then the natural impulse is to develop far more invasive proposals.

But coincidentally, and I'll grant that it's too soon -- Newtown was a month ago today -- to make any pronouncements on whether we're seeing a permanent shift in attitudes, the poll numbers since are stable. If anything, opinion is hardening in favor of gun control; all that's left is to quibble over the extent of it.

They're not "assault weapons"; just call them "Freedom Sparklers".

nothing to be done.  not even close.

i am speaking only about the feasibility of an AWB.
