that never make it to the REC list?

The article that I mentioned in my two previous comments has now been posted on DK.

As I write this, it is now down to number 12 on the recent diaries list and it has had two comments and no recommends.

Tom Dispatch is edited by Tom Englehardt and part of the effort of The Nation magazine. He has an impressive group of authors who publish on his blog.

I can't recall if any of these posts ever made the Rec list.

A couple of years ago I thought that I could write a diary and get a big following, but at least for me, unless I take many hours to compose a diary, and write a good one, and hit just at the right time, the chances are almost zero that I will make it long enough to be seen.

rules. As you know prior to DK4 there were diary content standards and a limit of one diary per day per UID. Diaries now move through the recent diary list at a much faster pace.

    •  Don't know how much it impacts readership (9+ / 0-)

I know for me, I've come to rely heavily on the snippet at the beginning of the diary that I can see when I scroll over the title. This is what I see on the tomdispatch diaries

This article originally appeared at TomDispatch.com. To receive TomDispatch in your inbox three times a week, click here.
I will admit that I then conclude if the most important thing the poster wants me to take away is to visit their site and sign up for their e-mails, there are probably other more useful diaries to read.

I rely on the snippet also.  If the information about the diary topic doesn't catch me, I move on.  I do the same thing with the diaries where the snippet is just a link to the same diary posted to the author's twitter account.

I know I'm missing a ton of well-written and informative diaries, but I'm also reading a ton of well-written and informative diaries that have encouraged me to click through via their informative snippet.

However, due to this comment thread, I will make a point to catch TomDispatch diaries in the future.

It's interesting, though, that they don't often (ever?) seem to get picked up by Community Spotlight either. Neither do the RH Reality Check postings, which has a similar model of various people contributing the content. And both tend to be "posters" who do not participate or respond to comments or discussion.
