has turned my hyper right wing MIL against Rick Scott. She found out a few days ago that her son (FloridaSNDAd who has CP, asthma, and a heart issue) was taken off medicaid when they switched him from SSI to straight SS on his father's benefits and instead put on medically needy with a $989 monthly buy in. Essentially he went from getting just under $800 a month and being covered by medicaid to getting just under $1200 a month and not being covered unless his monthly medical expenses went over $989. That means routine medical care and prescriptions are no longer covered, he's basically only covered if he ends up in the ER. He also doesn't get medicare like they told him they would when they were doing this switch.
I pointed out to her that we were well under the poverty line, and if Rick Scott wasn't turning down medicaid expansion her son would be covered fully like he has been his whole adult life (as a child he was covered under his father's policy). Her response: "When can we vote him out of office??"
Up to that point she had an excuse for everything he did. Now she's finally seeing the light. I hope that will extend to other policies and politics as well. She's also not happy that our food stamps were cut so far. She's upset that this potential for moving our lives ahead by just a little bit ($400 a month) has been thwarted by other necessary things being cut. This is what I was worried about when they were going through the process of changing his benefits, but she didn't see it then. She didn't think it was set up to screw you this way.
