    I notice he uses a literary trick at the end that I've seen used by Middle European and other writers who have lived under Soviet tyranny -- the switch to the personal I that is a reversal of the pov of the body of the text.

    Determining who the "I" really is is the key to understanding.

    He lives up to my expectations of what a Middle European intellectual looks like.  In his case, I think, "Very Magyar."  I had a Hungarian aunt.  She would have appreciated this essay, having escaped the Russian heel at the risk of her life when she was a young woman in the 50s.
