Critics assail Cuomo's gun deal as secret, rushed
Ever notice that the shit we don't want to read is not behind the WSJ paywall?

I haven't been here long enough to be considered a Kossack, does that mean that I'm just a sack?

Both Democratic and Republican lawmakers complained they saw the bill for only 20 minutes to two hours before they had to vote. And several Republicans said in floor debates that Cuomo, a Democrat, pushed his bill to passage to boost his own political career...

Cuomo on Monday issued a "message of necessity" to suspend the three-day waiting period required for all bills under the state constitution, the way he has for almost all of his major policy issues and budgets. Governors often use the measure created for emergencies to seize a deal negotiated behind closed doors before lobbyists, rank-and-file lawmakers, the media and the public can raise concerns which could unravel a deal.

Cuomo said Tuesday he feared an "unprecedented" rush to buy assault weapons if he waited three days for a legislative vote. He discounted the criticism as coming from lawmakers who opposed the gun control bill, but who he said were silent when the waiting period was suspended for bills they supported, such as pension reform.

"It tends to be politically expedient," the governor said.

but that is how they pass dog catcher legislation. I strongly disagree with it but this is not a special case. It really is standard operating procedure.

New York is so fucking broken.

The Syracuse paper has been running prominent web ads in the right hand columns for the last 15 days at least, for a "huge' Sportsman's Show in Harrisburg, PA in February.  One can reach Harrisburg in 2-5 hours from upstate NY.

Conveniently Rt 15 south into the Harrisburg area has mostly been reconstructed and is now a beautiful road, making travel easier and faster.

Until there are restrictions on transportation over state lines, things will continue.  Bet you can go into a gun shop in NY and see flyers which say, "Here's a coupon for $2. off admission.  See me at booth #2_5, for special deals for NYS residents."

Dealers are supposed to get rid of the 8 or more ammo clips in their inventory by selling them 'out of state'.  !!!!

Whatever, we are very pleased about this - hopefully it helps to prevent some tragedies and those who own guns take better care and responsibility in their handling and storage.  Of course none of our reps in this area voted for this - don't even have to look it up!!

      •  Patriot Act, anyone? (0+ / 0-)

Congresscritters only heard a summary before they were whipped to pass the thing. And it has only gotten worse.
