  •  I bet it's been sitting in someone's desk drawer (8+ / 0-)

for years if not decades waiting for such a moment, and only needed some tweaks to be vote-ready. I bet there are other major bills sitting in Dems' (and, sigh, Repubs') desk drawers waiting for the right time. Like war plans, this is how you prepare for victory. Sun Tsu and all that.

parts of this have been proposed or talked about before but the details in how it is all put together and the loopholes that get added in order to get Republicans on board... this concerns me and I look forward to get a better chance to look at the legislation directly.

For example, one of my concerns is the mental health part of the legislation. Adam B. posted a bit of it below. It is very difficult to write legislation that effectively deals with folks in mental health breakdown condition without simultaneously taking away the rights of people with less dangerous mental health conditions. This one is a case of them already working on such legislation but I am worried about the details of what they actually came up with and how it will be implemented.

We neither want a national registry of people with non-institutionalized mental illnesses nor any reason to discourage the mentally ill from seeking help. But aren't the people we most have to worry about the ones who've already been diagnosed as psychotic, and thus are probably already on some list?

        •  Mental breakdowns are only part (6+ / 0-)

of the issue. Certainly we want to try and stop things like Newtown and Aurora and the others from happening... or limit their horror if we can't stop it completely... but there is also the issue of domestic violence that turns deadly because of guns in the house, the issue of inner city gang violence, suicides, etc. So, though I don't think you meant it this way, there are more than just the mentally ill that we need to worry about.

But in answer to your last question, no, there really isn't a list. Patient privacy laws have become stricter... and for good reason... keeping such lists and further stigmatizing people with a particular variety of illness is a serious problem while at the same time perhaps necessary. So how exactly it gets done is of critical importance.
