  •  I believe the current Illinois Constitution (6+ / 0-)

says that every citizen of Illinois is a member of the militia, subject to a call by the Governor.

I'm sure other states have that little-noticed provision.

    Create. Build. Serve. Encourage. Teach.

    •  the primary reason (8+ / 0-)

was to fight native Americans.  Slave patrols were mostly local and we're controlled by the local sheriff not state militia. They could be called up in the event of a revolt but this was not main reason.

English tradition had a long history of opposing large standing armies and this was continued after independence. In addition the new country could not afford a large standing army. It was easier to put much of the cost on the states.

The 2nd Amendment has out lived its usefulness but we should get history correct.

Read Federalist 29, BTW it came before the Amendment was writing.

When you say it is "common sense" what you are really saying is "I don't have any evidence to back up my argument", because it is quite often neither common nor sense.
