  •  And the biggest demographic of Latinos (14+ / 0-)

Are Mexican Americans and Mexican nationals.

And while our nativists whine about the "illegals", you know what they complain about in Mexico?  Our weak or non-existent gun laws.  I can't emphasize this enough.  Mexicans are sick to death of us exporting guns to their country because the narcotrafficantes turn those weapons on their communities, children, businesses.  Here's a really interesting, and methdologically robust article by an economist that pretty convincingly estimates that the expiry of the assault weapons ban killed upwards of 3000 Mexicans.

Most Mexican immigrants (and Mexican American citizens) are not wild about having their communities overrun with guns, on either side of the border.  It's good policy and good politics for the Pres to take on the NRA because along with comprehensive immigration reform, we're listening to Latino voters.  I am very supportive of anything that tightens up this flow of weapons into Mexico.  How can we insist that the Mexicans control narcotics when we are essentially arming the narcos? If we want progress from the new Mexican adminstration on reducing cocaine imports, we ought to listen to their concerns and work with them on weapons.

I live in what is now a 60% Latino community where 99% are Mexican.  The embrace of guns, across generations so you can't just blame it on gangbanging, is obvious.  It's like the "more believing in hard work" stereotype.  Since nobody has actually studied either of these with a robustly-constructed study about attitudes, it all comes down to us being careful not to reinforce racist stereotypes, either way, in the name of "complimenting" a particular group.

and actually did a quick search to see if there were any published statistics, and didn't find any given the amount of time I have at the moment.

I think we can say a few things:

The Mexican government and public wants much tighter gun control in the US. That's certain.

We're never going to ban handguns or hunting weapons - and that isn't at issue.  I also lived for many years in a Latino community in NM, and while many people hunted and most(?) were gun owners, these were not the sort of folks that embraced assault weapons, and they were not keen at all on gangbangers getting armed. Now, that's NM and hardly representative.  Although I'm not Latino, both my wife and I work for organizations that are closely connected to the immigrant community here and there's pretty broad opposition within urban Chicago including in the Latino community, to court decisions that are likely to enable people to carry concealed handguns here.  Nobody rational in Chicago wants assault weapons...

I would suspect, without the polling to prove it, that Latino communities in the US may have an internal gun culture but also support reasonable controls.  It would be good to find out the breakdown of the hard-core NRA membership that is so freaked out about assault weapons bans.  My strong suspicion is that Latinos are probably significantly underrepresented in NRA membership

I mean, who's to say that other demographics won't want to keep their guns or even offer up the idea that keeping their guns will protect them from be reconquered by whites.

Not saying that would happen, but I can see that rationale being offered up.
