Like Lieberman, she lost the primary but still won the general.  Except he had a ballot line in 06, she won as a write in.  I imagine that will deter any primary challenge going forward.

The rest of them are pretty screwed.  Crist had to leave office for a while and slowly evolve into a Democrat.  I don't think there is a lot of appetite for party switchers.  If the state is purple or blue, the Democrats will just want their own candidate (a la Specter).  If the state is red, they will be defeated as turncoats.

The problem for these guys and gals is that if they just toe the party line, the whole Republican brand will be trashed as the government and economy come crashing down around them, and a whole bunch will lose in 2014 because the contest will become nationalized with Republicans as the #1 problem facing the nation.  Won't matter if they voted the "right" way or not, people will be beyond that kind of petty partisanship purity.

If they cut deals as individual senators, the party may retain a certain amount of credibility, but they will lose primaries.

The next cycle is ours to lose.

There is truth on all sides. The question is how much.

it would be if not for a bad map in the Senate and Mr. Gerry Mander in the House.

The crashing Republican brand doesn't entirely counteract those unfortunate facts, but if we can avoid pissing off 60% of the American population by cutting Medicare and Social Security, we should weather 2014 OK and be set up for a much better 2016.

if necessary for years; if necessary, alone
