    I needed a car in 2009 so cashed out my 401(k) to pay cash for it.  I was fed up with the crap return and the lack of choice of individual investment vehicles.  I had a choice of baskets with so many entities in them, there was no way I could research them.  My equities that I pick myself always did better than the 401(k).  I agree that 401s are just a way for Wall Street to get the 'dumb money'  just like privatizing Social Security would be.
