  •  I'm a gun owner (11+ / 0-)

I own "assault weapons", and high cap mags for semi-auto pistols. I shoot them responsibly, and store them in a vault. I'm not the problem.
Prior to the tragedy at Newtown CT, I was ambivalent toward more gun control. Now, I am not. I fully support President Obama's plan. I would be more than happy to jump through a few extra hoops to keep my guns. What I am not willing to do is to turn on the TV and hear of another groups of children massacred by a lunatic with a gun.
As a country, we die a little each time one of these asinine massacres occur. The status quo is unacceptable. It's time we got serious about gun control.
    Thank you President Obama
PS not all gun owners are raving gun nuts, in fact they are the minority, albeit a VERY vocal minority.

clearheadedness and for saying what many of us already knew but maybe haven't stressed enough. Most gun owners are responsible and sane.
And our nation's global reputation suffers with each instance of this madness.

My cousin did two tours in the Army as an MP. He undergoes certification twice annually to be able to carry and, if necessary, use firearms in the course of his work, even though firearms are not currently part of his job. He is an excellent shot, level-headed. He is what truly anti-gun people wish all gun owners were- highly-trained, sober and serious about gun ownership.

He is a bit wary about gun control talk right now, but he can understand and sympathize with both sides of the discussion.

Canada has more guns per citizen than the US and only a fraction of the gun crime. I've heard this explained away as a matter of population density, but while that could account for some of it, it wouldn't account for the urban areas' records of gun violence.
I agree with Michael Moore's assessment. What Canada doesn't have is anything like the NRA. And they don't have media that caters to a particular political philosophy that also spreads fear and outrage practically 24/7.
I'm not for abridging the first amendment either, but I'd like to see more responsibility and accountability in the RW media.

I believe in democracy, civil liberties, and the rule of law. That makes me a liberal, and I’m proud of it. - Paul Krugman
