Apparently, the polls show that their own membership is in disagreement with the leadership on gun control. When I learned of the Mother Jones (my favorite magazine, after the New Yorker) piece watching Lawrence O'Donnell last night, it occurred to me that this unmasking is important if for no other reason than we can now see that there are plenty of individual gun owners who may also be members of the NRA who are not totally nuts. It separates the NRA's leadership from a goodly number of people who own guns. That is good, because rather than fighting gun owners, we have a tangible enemy of sensible gun policy: the board of the NRA.

I'll bet there are responsible gun owners all over the country who will be rushing to disassociate themselves (and their membership dues) from this organization. I for one have never thought that the gubmint is coming for the varmint gun I keep up at the cottage. I have a feeling that the majority of gun owners in this country resemble me more than they do the folks with assault weapons.

      your "varmint gun" is safe.

I hope that the quality of debate will improve,
but I fear we will remain Democrats.

My dad and his wife bring their dog there. I bring my cat there. Guests like Bill in Portland Maine and CSM bring their dog to visit. We have had coyotes and fishers on the island and they are vicious. I've never had to shoot it, but I have a very good reason to have it and that is to protect my domestic animals that love to be outside there just like I do.

People who live in the country tend to keep guns for good reason. Frankly, I would suggest that there are lots of good reasons to keep guns. However, IMO, there is no good reason to keep the kinds of guns that the Newtown shooter's mother kept and he used to massacre children.
