  •  My food co-op here in (7+ / 0-)

OR is made of cob. It was fascinating watching it be built. Three years later it looks great even the roof is planted with permaculture grasses to help absorb the deluges of rain we get here.

Any chance you can post a pic? I think I remember reading that dailykos.com will host pictures now rather than having to find some other website to serve them up.

Was it folks from the Cob Cottage Company that built the co-op?

Personally, I wouldn't go with a living roof. I'd use metal and store the rainwater  in a cistern or maybe just swales to saturate the ground where I wanted it saturated.

Alas, it's all academic. The folks who've tried cob in VT and NH say it's just too cold. But that's with a tiny fraction of the heat input of a stick frame house. You can tell I'm still toying with the idea to see if there might be some way to make in practical in NH. If I recall correctly, NH is at nearly the same latitude as OR but is colder due to weather patterns and the Atlantic ocean.

Reaganomics noun pl: belief that unregulated capitalism can produce unlimited goods for unlimited people on a planet with finite resources and we the people can increase revenue by decreasing revenue.
