    Back when I freeranged my hens in my yard (before they contracted poultry mites from the wild bird population here, that is) one of my runt hens made a nest for herself in a tangle of thorns and laid fourteen eggs there before I found it.

    She wasn't interested in brooding them--she just wanted a place where she could lay them quietly without harassment from the alpha hens.

    I stumbled on the cache when I was pulling brambles. Luckily all her cackleberries were still edible. But Henny Penny was pissed that I found her secret nest and from that point on laid in the henhouse like most of my other birds.
