  •  The big problem in TN (2+ / 0-)

is that the Democratic Party is useless-- there's no bench, not much activity, but tons of backslapping & expensive dinners for the old guard.  We have some good younger Dem pols working their way up through Metro Council and so forth, but all the energy is on the GOP side and will be for the foreseeable future.  Memphis does have Steve Cohen, but the local Democratic machine is hopelessly corrupt & ineffective; Nashville has Karl Dean as mayor but he'd wait for Cooper to retire instead of challenging him.  The rest of the state is red.

Cooper is an embarrassment.  He's pleasant enough in person, but he's obsessed with deficits, possibly less because of any real belief than because it's a morality-play script that goes over well with the rubes.  I always assumed he planned to run for statewide office at some point & that explained the Blue Dog thing, but he's staying put even though he's well to the right of a majority of his constituents.  All I know is that I shoulda kept moving north and east instead of settling in even the most liberal part of Tennessee.
