    is to force Republicans to be specific.
    Lots of low-info voters like the idea of "cutting handouts" in the abstract, but when you force them to think about the details, some of them can be educated.  
    Don't let the Republicans run on a vague "cut handouts" platform.  Pin them down: Does that mean cutting Social Security, or Medicare, or unemployment benefits, veterans benefits, or what? Medicaid for the elderly in nursing homes? By how much?
    The easy cuts ("welfare for illegal aliens") are already gone, or don't amount to much. For cuts to make a difference in the budget, they're going to hurt the middle class, retirees, and everybody's friends and neighbors. Thus far, the Republicans haven't been forced to acknowledge that.
