They've been doing this since the late 40's, at least. Respectable-seeming older white rich men were no longer reliably winning elections so they turned to ratfuckers like Nixon, who was the father of all this. They know that they can't win on substance, so they game the system. But they always overreach. Remember how DeLay was brought down by it? They scored some big state-level wins in 2010 and think it makes them invincible. Have you seen their numbers though? Half of them will be out of a job in 2 years.

The biggest problems come when they succeed in screwing with individual states. It becomes a self feeding loop. Our county was majority D for years, we were gerrymandered in with a huge swathe of rural Utah, our town stayed D for about another decade but as the state continued to tilt rightward more and more people jumped on the bandwagon.

A case can be made that the Mormon church had a big part to play in it and that's true, but now they are trying to get the news out that "it's OK to be a Democrat!" They are being frightened by the extremism in the party and the prospective primaries of reliable pols.

They may well eventually even out the state for their own preservation, but we are now talking decades, more than half of my 62yrs. The pendulum does swing, but it's damn slow.

I'm not totally negative on this, but it does need watching and the people need to be aware of what is going on. Think about the Emergency Manager thing in Michigan, a lot of damage can be done in a short time while no one is looking.

Nice talking with ya, if I don't get to bed I'll start typing total gibberish. My sleepy self speaks fluent gibberish :)

Maddow segment we're discussing. The states she was talking about are the ones where the Republicans already are in control of their legislatures and governorships. This has nothing to do with how they might fare in 2014. There is currently a coordinated effort in these states (that went of Obama) to enact EC changes before the next election. This is a huge deal. This is Wisconsin writ large.

Wear it proud. Wear it loud. Outlaw concealed carry. That gun hidden under your coat won't deter shit.
