change your opinion. It's a constant battle against those that are making poor decisions like the group that has spawned all this, the Association of Ft. Bragg Officers Spouses. But for the few groups that are stuck in the past, there are many more that have not only allowed GLBT members to join but they have encouraged them to do so. We just hear less about those stories because they are not newsworthy... people are doing what they are supposed to do.

There are decent officer wives and husbands out there. My job is to make them more vocal so that the rest of the world knows that they exist!

We had an officers wife do a thesis on NCO and enlisted wives portrayed as 'high school drop outs' and 'ignorant breeders' who were barely intelligent enough to be 'beauty technicians'. There were a few that were different, but not many. I'd like to think that years later, things have improved. God knows there are many spouses who are quite intelligent and with all the stress, infighting is ridiculous.

They say a little knowledge is a dangerous thing, but it's not one half so bad as a lot of ignorance.

      •  And they are just there for the paycheck. (0+ / 0-)

Unlike Officers Wives- or something. They have a caste system so tight India is jealous.

spouses as I do officer spouses. It is a different world out there.

There are still problems. I won't lie to you. And I have been told I'm not a typical officer spouse but truth be told, a lot of officers spouses are not typical anymore. It's why most Officer Spouses' Clubs are struggling membership-wise. They've limited themselves for too long to those that can manage day time lunches and can volunteer for board meetings at 9am. I tried multiple times to switch events to evenings, including those ever important board meetings, but many don't want to lose quality time with the hubbie. I told them it was about time their significant other spent time with the kids without the second parent hanging around. Some get it, some don't. But it is changing.

It isn't just the O wives who buy into the stereotypes.  I suffered a bout of depression (  no job, no friends, having to live in base housing that looked more like welfare housing than anything soldiers' families should have to live in) and the asshole counselor at Family Services was a horror.  There I sat, a childless by choice feminist  Democrat with  two grad degrees, a professional writer and teacher and librarian, and Wiccan to boot--and her "suggestions" werePTA (ditto), apply for base jobs( I had, but spouse preference only app;ies AFTER you';re in the system, and those jobs were ones I was so over-qualified for they never even called me for an interview).  In other words, she bought into the dumb hick, uneducated, right-wing Christian, perpetually pregnant image.

And when I had to go to dental for my overseas screening, the S.O.B LT (Navy)  couldn't understand why I was annoyed about forms STILL listing me as a dependent rather than a spouse.  HIS wife didn't mind, he informed me, and SHE had a master's degree.

I looked at him and said, "I'll meet her master's, raise her one, and throw in a Phi Beta Kappa key. NOW am I allowed to be insulted?"

He threatened to withhold my permission to go to Japan because of my attitude. My husband's squadron CO got involved and called the dentist's boss.  He had to call my husband from his CO's office and apologize profusely. That happened because the CO was African American and this guy hadn't been more than barely polite to his wife either, likely because of race.

The last time we mixed religion and politics people got burned at the stake.
