  •  Especially when the system relies on those spouses (3+ / 0-)

whose active duty counterpart are in a command position. It's no longer allowed to require that a spouse volunteer but the truth is the culture still depends on those spouses to give time, especially if their husbands or wives become commanders. If you don't, better just make a separate social life for yourself off base because the gossip and backbiting are more than most can take. It's horrible. I've brought many a friend down to earth when they've complained about how snooty the commander's spouse is because they don't plan events. It's a crazy life sometimes.

Housing (usually sub standard), identified as last four. Family is usually in another state (country) and the husband is gone a lot. After mine was assigned to a special forces unit, I pretty much had to become a spare Sargent. They knew I was an electrician with some heating and air conditioning training, also a seamstress who did light auto repair and computer programming. Not bad for a history major. Worse, my husband was the only married NCO.

They say a little knowledge is a dangerous thing, but it's not one half so bad as a lot of ignorance.
