    First off, if you had followed the link I gave for that statement, you would have had your answer right there.  The North American and Eurasian plates are pulling apart along the entire northern Mid-Atlantic ridge.  The question is, why in this one place along the ridge is there one third of all of the lava on earth arising?  The entire ridge isn't like that, nor are any of the other ridges on Earth.  The link discusses the varied theories, but nobody really knows the answer.
