    that what Rei says is correct. Iceland is a hotspot on top of a midoceanic ridge - and explaining why this hotspot is there and why it is so prolific is indeed absolutely not a settled issue. MOR´s are well understood and common, but Iceland is not.

    Its also nearly the only place on earth (at least as far as I know) where one can go and look at a spreading center. The only other place is the Afar depression, which is in fact transitional between a rift and a MOR, so in this respect Iceland really is unique.
