i live on a patch of ground in a fertile little valley in SA AZ...might try some varieties. i have discovered that growing things like tepary beans (traditional native desert hardy beans) grow wonderfully here and i am able to plant them at monsoon and get a crop with very little additional water.

the problem i find is that cleaning them is very labor intensive. i winnow and screen but still need to pick through  each batch with care. i could see quinoa being tough that way too, but reading about this makes me want to try, as I love the stuff, but can barely afford it myself.

    •  SE AZ maybe? We are in Bisbee, (0+ / 0-)

And, like a comment suggested above, ripped out our lawn and put in a vegetable garden.  Great fun, great food, and a real attention getter.  Bigger and better next year.

When banjos are outlawed, only outlaws will have banjos.
