  •  Here's my guess- that they're quiet right now, and (9+ / 0-)

    will be until nesting season. Thus they can quietly appear and disappear, and you won't really know who you have on hand until they start proclaiming their territory a little later on. I live a few miles north of you in Alameda, and I haven't heard any scrub jays in a while, but I'm starting to see them in the back yard if I watch long enough. The noise stopped last fall about the time the fig crop started to taper off.   :)

    Regarding the Cooper's hawk mentioned below, ours sail in and out unpredictably. So just wait, and in a year or more or less you'll see them back.
