One of the really big problems in the political world is the group-think mentality.  People begin to believe that because a president wins with a swing state strategy, that's THE strategy for all of the party political initiatives.  That problem is compounded with the multitude of Southern states in which they hold open primaries which makes it really difficult for a real progressive to win anywhere - what happens is that in the primaries the conservatives vote for the most whacked out unacceptable Dem candidate (some of whom are funded by the conservatives like Clare McCaskill did with Aikn) and then they run effectively unopposed.

The only way to break the cycle of those kinds of primary problems is to spend a lot of time and money locally.  The challenge there is that with the exception of a couple of years in the past ten, it has been decades since Democrats have been down in those states.  Also, in the rare moments that we do win a seat in those states we also are often dealing with a Republican calling himself a "Blue Dog" - but that's not always because the actual people are super conservative in those districts - it is because the machine is set up to produce nothing but conservative choices.

Anyway, at the very least we shouldn't be getting our asses kicked in the bluer states at the state level the way we have lately.  It is an embarrassment.
