My husband and I scored tickets in a lottery from our then Senator Alan Spector.  It was my first and only inauguration and I was so proud to be there for such an historic day.

We won't do it again, though.  At least not any time soon.  We were "up front" - in the public area closest to the action - and because of that, getting out of there was a total nightmare.  By that point we'd been in that cold outdoors for gawd, I don't know how many hours (12?  14?) and my extremities were frozen despite being heavily bundled.  I could barely walk, my frozen feet hurt so badly.

Forget using the metro to leave.  Just forget it.  We kept getting re-routed by police on horseback just trying to exit THE MALL so that by the time we did, we collapsed into a bar to warm up and have a well needed drink.  We ended up walking back to the friend's house where we were staying, @ Dupont Circle.  After that day...OMG it was brutal.  A bike would have been nice.

If I did it again I'd do it without tickets and hang at the back closer to the Washington Monument so I could be out quicker. You don't have to get there at the crack of dawn for that and can be the first to blaze when it's over.  Otherwise it's a long day.

It was OMG cold.  And yeah, we actually did try to go back on the Metro.  We hung out on the Mall a while just basking in the day.  Caught John Oliver of the Daily Show doing some interviews & almost got on teevee ourselves.  Waved to KO in the MSNBC booth.  By the time we got to the Metro station, about a half million people were in front of us.

"It is not, you fucking liberal prick." ..My RW friend Dave's last words to me.
