    said that the US could construct a solar power station in the southwest that would provide all the power we (the US) needed for a cost of $50B.  I don't care if the estimate is off by a factor of 5. Even at $250B it's a worthwhile investment.

    That is not to discount wind -- it would seem to make sense to construct plants that get the most energy per dollar invested AND don't forget the maintenance costs (what we in the enginnering world refer to as the "O&M tail").

    As I posted a little ways up the comment stack, a huge problem is getting this energy across an antiquated power grid.
