    starred in Julia, the first series with an African-American lead character who wasn't a domestic or in some stereotypical role (cf. Amos and Andy). She played a widowed nurse and mother whose husband was killed when his plane was shot down in Vietnam. This was two very turbulent years after Star Trek debuted.

      I thought I remembered she was a widowed mother with a daughter in the show.
