Suicide is many horrible things, but "tomfoolery" isn't one of them. I've been diagnosed with clinical depression since jr high school, and contemplated it a lot, but only came close to it once, during a mental breakdown triggered by the death of a woman I dearly loved. I learned then the deadly difference between contemplating suicide, even wanting it, and being so far gone you're ready to go through with it.

Without going into a long rant, just imagine how sad and in pain you've ever been in your life and survived it without a suicide attempt. To actually kill you, the pain and anguish and despair have to, by definition, be worse than that. The worst thing you've ever suffered didn't kill you. To actually kill you, it has to be worse still.

Never before or since have I ever felt anything like that. I didn't merely want to die, I was dead already in my heart and soul, mortally wounded, and only looking to finish the job on my body that hadn't gotten the message.

Unless you've been there, you literally cannot imagine how bad off you really have to be. I couldn't have imagined it before, and even now my memory pales to the actual experience.

I wouldn't wish that on anyone, and I certainly won't mock anyone so desperately wounded that they actually went over that edge.

of what I also managed to live through. Thanks, it is hard to tell. It helps others get a better understanding that you can't understand without experiencing.

If any one who is familiar with Harry Potter has not heard this. The Dementors are JK Rowlings portrayal of depression from her experience. An excellent effort.

How horrible that the diarist linked two incidents that took place using the same exact gun.  What a giant creative leap of emotional exploitation on the writer's part!

      Take your sanctimony elsewhere.

      Obviously suicide is horrible.

However, as horrible as suicide by an adult or adolescent is, I personally am at least as horrified by the death of a child by an unsupervised handgun.

My comment was intended simply to point out that two horrible things—one potential, one actual—were linked, horribly, by a single implement of death.

My use of “tomfoolery” was meant in a contemptuous way, as I condemn both suicide and child handgun deaths.

So, have at me, but with perhaps a little more clarity as to my intention.
