    I wish I had a pear tree.

    and a blackberry bush.

    •  We have blackberry bushes. They're a nuisance. (3+ / 0-)

The ones that grow around here tend to grow in thickets and brambles. Left to themselves they'll take over a yard. This would not be so bad if they didn't have thorns the size of Bilbo's dagger.

Don't get me wrong, I love blackberries, and two or three weeks out of the year the blackberry bushes are useful. But the rest of the time they're an invading alien species that needs to be kept at bay.

If you can't say anything nice about the GOP, please post here more often.

by hand, a few years ago (about an acres' worth) and lit the cuttings on fire.

Talk about stupid. Ended up with a HUGE roaring fire that almost got away from me.

The neighbours thought it was hilarious.

I did not because I knew how close I came to losing control of the thing.

No more blackberries, though. Except for one small section on a fenceline.  And there they stay; getting cut down until they don't come back.

No more burning for this gal.

There are even thornless varieties, although admittedly, the ones I have have thorns.

I've been trying to decide if I have room enough to plant more, because Gurney's (I think, maybe one of the other gardening catalogs) is offering a set of 3 plants apiece of 3 different kinds as a deal really cheap.
