  •  Jayz, that's scary. Get well soon, DS. (7+ / 0-)

What's scarier is, as you mentioned, to be older and uninsured, waiting 1 more year for Medicare to kick in.

Years ago, my late mom had a stroke and my bro was bitching about some levels no one checked. Couple of years ago, I had a cholesterol test and asked for tests for a propensity toward diabetes (none) and stroke.

Stroke Test Shocker: Homocysteine levels through the roof! Level: 27.4. High levels rough up the interior of all the blood vessels, making it easier for plaque to build up.

The doc recommended a high-priced pill and I looked it up. It was merely a combo of Vitamins B6, B12, and Folic Acid. I bought the separate equivalent doses and a year later, the homocysteine level is 7.3.

    Again, be well, DS.

It's nuts to live in a country where roll-your-own healthcare is the norm. But tip o' the hat to you for doing your own research and following through. Glad you're with us!

      Good health to you

    •  That's nice to hear (0+ / 0-)

I have an abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA), and started taking big doses of B vitamins (B-100) last year, and my doctor agreed. There's some small research studies indicating homocysteine levels and aneurysm growth are correlated, although the research is inconclusive. I've never had that level checked, so it's nice to hear how yours dropped.

Low-functioning thyroid can also elevate homocysteine levels, and thyroxine (thyroid med) can help there if that's the cause.
