    whether it's pumped by solar or wind power.  Water from underground aquifers is stored fossil water, much like oil is an ancient fossil fuel.  In arid areas, it took thousands of years to charge aquifers with water, and we use more each year than is replenished.  Some of the water being pumped up is 25,000 years old.   The sustainable solution is to use only as much water each year as is deposited each year - which leaves us with hard choices in the face of climate change.
