    •  Wouldn't some gun owners deny it? (2+ / 0-)

      From the study:

Since the early 1970s the General Social Survey has asked the question: “Do you happen to have in your home (if house: or garage) any guns or revolvers?”
Seems likely that folks being asked in some (telephone?) survey if they have any guns would deny it if they did.  They might suspect it was the first step toward "They're coming after my guns!"
      •  The GSS differs (4+ / 0-)

from almost every other poll in that they conduct face to face interviews, and ask the same questions (with some tweaks) year after year. It is the reason that the GSS surveys are almost universally considered to be authoritative.

Sure, people can lie, but they could have lied in the 1970s when the question was first posed just as easily as they could lie now.

      •  I would trust the information a lot more if it (0+ / 0-)

came from a source that didn't have a vested and direct interest that furthers their goal if they use a minimized number.  There are too many ways to massage data and cherry pick polling numbers to try to prove a desired result.  Perhaps they did, perhaps they didn't but I would like to see numbers from a neutral source.  This goes with anything, not just this issue.
