this great satire, but it is truly lost on the black helicopter crowd who do not recognize themselves in the mirror because they've shot up their mirrors thinking they saw someone creeping up on them.

the same arguments. I'm both amazed and wryly amused at the #4 bit. On "home defense" I also remember a police briefing and video demonstrating how even a trained policeman feigning sleep in a darkened room and confronted with a sudden intrusion tended to miss rather badly and statistics showing sleeping with a weapon usually resulted in family tragedy rather than successful defense.

The true trademark here is fear. I find that all too prevalent in society. The fear of "going into the city" where grandmothers safely walk neighborhood streets in most areas. The fear of foreign travel unless escorted or in a "deployment." Lots of dangerous things "out there" but much of this fear is totally irrational. I find it pitiful to find an otherwise strong individual, living in a relatively safe area, constantly fearful of the "intruder" even though, yes indeed, the occasional national news story does have a horrible "intruder" or "home invasion" story. It is much like the irrational fear of spiders and snakes, of flying or high bridges.

"Be alert, be aware, but never be afraid".

        •  Sensible words anywhere. I am constantly surprised (0+ / 0-)

by how many people seem governed in critical behaviors and life style by irrational or completely disproportional fears. They routinely participate in activities with considerable risk, rush hour expressway driving, while then missing out on some wonderful things because there is a very minor associated risk.

A lot is plain ignorance. For example, many don't know dangerous spiders and snakes so every one of them is a source of fear. Other cling to fears even after masses of evidence prove them groundless.

A sad state for a life and often not far from a true psychosis.
