    that I realized why my dad's family never really liked her -- he was engaged to another girl back home in MO when he met my mom while he was waiting for the Navy to find his paperwork so he could be cut from the service post-WWII (he was at Treasure Island and my mom was living in SF with her mom; a friend of his invited him to go out on the town with a couple of locals he knew, and the rest is history). I tell friends that I owe my existence to military red tape.
