  •  When people argue for more guns, I tell them... (10+ / 0-)

that guns in the hands of responsible people are not the problem.  It's irresponsible people having guns that is the problem.  And it's not hard to get them to agree that MOST people are irresponsible and should NOT be encouraged to carry a gun.

You just have to explain it in a way that they wind up coming to the conclusion that more guns is not the answer.

Although, being in one of the states that just legalized pot, it's kind of like shooting fish in a barrel for me to win this argument with people here.  :P

    •  and what do you mean by that? (2+ / 0-)

That seems pretty close to HR-able.

And this is one hell of an assumption

I will imagine you find yourself more responsible than the average schmoe; how do you determine this about others?

What do you mean by 'irresponsible'?

Most people can't keep jobs or pay their bills regularly?

Most people can't drive to work without a problem?

And how'd you wind up in judgement of others regarding this vast lack of responsibility?

      •  Most people, I would guess, are responsible (0+ / 0-)

enough to do most things well, but not responsible enough to carry weapons around children all the time. I'm not, for example.

we keep out of schools and away from kids and guns are 'dangerous enough' to be on such a list...outside possession by specially licenced, trained blah blah blah.

I worked in psychiatric hospitals and even law enforcement had to secure their guns in a special box outside the units - no exceptions.

Would seem a normal sort of protocol for schools....

        •  I'm mostly hyper-responsible about that sort of (0+ / 0-)

          thing.

          And I'm smart.

I would never want that responsibility.

Driving a schoolbus full of 5th and 6th graders with behavior problems for 3 months was more than stressful enough.

I can do it but I sure don't want to.

      •  hey, dr zombie, you need to eat more brains!! (0+ / 0-)

you are missing the obvious in my comment

i said that i say that when talking to people who argue for more guns as the solution to gun violence

you can't argue from your own point of view with people who have a different point of view and change their minds

you have to think from their point of view and propose something that appeals to them

not every discussion with someone who disagrees with you has to be a fight
