    Spinning those elaborate webs isn't for the stupid. The deficit in their minds is in the reality-checking component.

      smart people often believe weird things because their intelligence makes them particularly skilled at justifying to themselves decisions that they arrived at for non-smart reasons. Or as Robert Heinlein said "man is not a rational animal. Man is a rationalizing animal."
