  •  I used to carry artichokes to school (4+ / 0-)

    for lunch when I was a kid. The other students were appalled...until one guy ate a leaf on a dare. From then on he was bugging me constantly on artichoke day. The other kids insisted he was crazy to eat something other than overcooked stringbeans. Southern Americans at least have always distrusted green vegetables.
    Even in cheesy English Quick Trips and gas stations, they carry vegetables like leeks, parsnips, carrots, and potatoes. That would not be true, nor has been true in the last 50 years in the U.S.
