  •  Yes, but he did repent. (10+ / 0-)

We must fight against those who have not learned from history. There are many among us who would gladly turn back the clock on all of our civil rights, given the chance.

    •  Well, there were schools that resisted (6+ / 0-)

integration to the last...till they realized that those schools who had integrated had far better sports teams and got tired of getting their asses whooped.

      •  I Cannot Forget the Image (7+ / 0-)

several years back when a basketball team from one of the southern universities upset a highly rated team and this elderly white guy in a suit (I'm guessing big booster) comes running onto the court to embrace a black player just dripping with sweat.

I was struck by the dichotomy of the scene: a white man unashamedly hugging one who's black; and the likelihood that this black athlete, getting paid "nothing," was making money for the white booster.

    •  Yes, he did. Allegedly. (6+ / 0-)

I still reserve judgment a bit, because too many such "conversions" are entirely opportunistic.  And it does not excuse his earlier behavior.

But Mr. Hood was a better man, and was willing to extend far more than the benefit of the doubt, so I'll do likewise, doubts aside.

      •  I was surprised by that situation. (0+ / 0-)

His initial pretense rang hollow. 7 years after being paralyzed, he really seemed to have seen the light, and I had been an RN for 2 years. The toll of paralysis and pain can teach many lessons that have been presented and failed before.

At that point his political career was over and somehow I found it believable, really weird after all the years I had loathed him.
