My personal history shows no reason to suspect any artistic aptitude so I am not sure just why I arrived at that decision. But since it's essentially just 3-D paint by numbers even people like I can get decent results. We just have to pick out the colors.

Of course that "just" turns out to be pretty big. The instinct for good color combinations, high-lighting and shading, wet-blending, using washes and glazes ... there's a ton of skill and knowledge required. I seriously doubt I will ever get really good.

I'm using acrylics too, water-based. There's a half-dozen companies that make paint designed for miniatures. I've got samples on order to see which ones work best for me. Until now i've been using cheap craft paints. And now I'm trying to learn about the various additives to improve paint performance.

Inks are also used in mini paintings. A whole 'nother ball game. So much to learn.

Which is why I clicked on here. It's starting to dawn on me that canvas painters use much the same techniques - base coats, highlightings, washes, glazes, etc. But the idea of  creating all that on a blank white sheet of canvas using only the brain ... that still blows me away.

    •  Good luck with your miniatures! (1+ / 0-)
