  •  My kids and I got into that situation once (8+ / 0-)

We were traipsing thru a local stand of pines on a known path (in a posted no-hunting area, no less!), when lead began whizzing thru, and into, the branches not far overhead - ZING! PHWIP! ZING! THUNK!

Stood there yelling like a MAD man, top of my lungs, "HEY! I've got my f---ing KIDS over here! HOLD UP!" until they went silent. Scary, scary, few moments.

Not sure shooting back would have discouraged them, probably the kind of guys who like to shoot insulators from the high-lines. Bet my 30-40 (old WWI era sniper rifle) would have made an impression in return, but discretion and all - only thing I cared about right then was getting me and the kids as far away as we could, as fast as we could.

Ever use a Krag? Hell of a kick, big charge; was Dad's, had a modified stock with a wicked curved shoulder butt made of brass, of all things. I had to replace it with a padded leather butt I made to lace on where the brass plate had been, just so I could shoot it again-first time left me bruised for a week. Email me something about the 1911 if you would, I'm just curious...

(For anti-gunners: I don't hunt or even target practice any more. Don't shoot at all any more, for that matter. But I wouldn't give up my favorite old .22 varmint rifle for anyone, either. Ever.)
