    Roman equates well to the modern US both in regard to an experiment in Republican government and empire. One of the reasons I love history so much is to see how humans have played out roughly the same scenarios time and time again  with the same failings and fears and heroic efforts. Cicero says as much in parts I left out where he talks about learning from the Greeks.

    And yes, that particular line...

    "nothing in life is really worth having except moral decency and reputable behavior"
    ... stood out to me as well... though following that line of thought is an entirely different essay. :)

    I'm glad you and the others liked it. I particularly enjoyed my reading this morning and was enthused to share it with people I knew would understand.
