What drives them is truly, really, beyond me, but right now the emotional tide behind the whole "guns = evil" mindset is so strong that even attempting to reason with people coming from "let's get rid of all the guns and it will solve all the problems" mindset -- which is unreasoning as well as unreasonable -- is a great way to get everything from called a fool to accused of being a murderer.

The language right here on DKos about gun owners and the 2nd Amendment, including the to my way of thinking completely irrational trumpeting about the 2nd Amendment passing originally as a way of supporting and ensuring the continuation of slavery -- as if the writers of the Constitution hadn't themselves just been engaged in a long, bloody, and in-their-hood war to create a nation not part of the British Empire -- is insulting, to put it mildly.

I can't count the number of comments in which Nancy Lanza was vilified, if not outright libeled, and her death called her just comeuppance for the crime of owning firearms she kept in her home.

Sometimes, I think I'm a fool to keep caring about the impact these proud ignoramuses are having on the Democrats' future.

    •  Some of it is fear... (4+ / 0-)

...some of it is ignorance, some of it is something more nefarious (I just love that word).

There are those who truly believe that if they could only get rid of guns, then violence would vanish (in spite of reality), or are truly so afraid of guns that they believe that the inherent evil of inanimate objects will cause people who would not otherwise engage in violence.

There are also those on our side of the aisle who will take any and every opportunity and tragedy to impose their beliefs onto others.  If it wasn't guns, it would be something else -- but, at this moment, they feel that they have the momentum on their side (in the form of a tragedy that they exploit) to restrict, if not remove, a Civil Right that they, personally, do not approve of.

Sadly, right here, we've seen support of wireless wiretaps, the freakin' Patriot Act of all things, all supported by the "if you're not doing anything wrong, then what do you have to worry about?" argument that used to be called out when Republicans used it.

There are authoritarians on the Left as well as on the Right.  Currently, some of those are pushing the debate here at DKos, but it already seems to be fading in the party leadership (see Harry Reid, for instance).

Yes, I often dress as a pirate. Your point?
