  •  Microsoft? (6+ / 0-)

I get complaining about exploitative business practices. But you've got a list that includes the Koch brothers, the Walton family, and a slew of other unpleasant characters, and you pick on Microsoft?

Microsoft is one of the best employers in an industry full of exceptional employers. They have excellent pay, unparallelled benefits, fantastic working conditions, and a non-discrimination policy to die for.

And the vast majority of their profit comes from large-scale corporate licensing and other corporate solutions (i.e. selling to other wealthy entities). Their other major profit center is XBox games, which are a luxury. The profit margin on most of their consumer products is relatively low, and many are free (not out of altruism, of course, there are valid business reasons, but still.) Their developer products are mostly available free through their small business and student programs, and the stripped-down basic versions are free for everyone.

I'm not a Microsoft fanboy - I actually don't like most of their stuff. I prefer open-source as much as possible. And I don't particularly like coding for Microsoft platforms. In terms of corporate citizenship, they're not perfect - they're large and have monopolistic tendencies and like all companies they need to be regulated. But overall, they're pretty much a shining example of "treat your workers well and don't gouge the consumer."

Windows 8 for desktops is awful from a usability perspective and should never, ever have made it out the door in its current state.

But releasing crappy products and refusing to listen to your customers isn't unethical. It's just bad business. From an ethics standpoint, there are far bigger fish to fry. Many of which also sell crappy products and work to deny their customers other options. (cough)Walmart(cough)
