  •  I like to describe it in terms from 1984 or (7+ / 0-)

Gone with the Wind. When Winston Smith cracks, he screams, "No! No! Do it to Julia!" A critical moment for Scarlett O'Hara is when she cries out, "As God is my witness I will never be hungry again!"

There is a lot of suffering in the world, as you can hear it described particularly in Christian or Buddhist terms. (Vale of tears, for example, or First Noble Truth: Life is suffering.) We all have to confront that. The key question in religion, philosophy, or politics is whether you wish to address this problem by tackling its causes, or whether your idea of a solution is to ruthlessly, sleeplessly, unsmilingly shuffle it all off onto someone else.

And so the key question for the rest of us is how to form a society that does not push so many of its members to make such choices.

    America—We built that!
