    ... since so much of what we can say about President Garfield is speculative -- but there's some things you can look at in the few months he was President, and  moreso his whole life, to  point to him being a progressive president if he hadn't been killed.  He was a college professor, a lay leader in the Disciples of Christ (then, and to some extent still now, a progressive and activist denomination), and always seems to have been well liked, competent, fair, and forward looking in all of this -- including his army and political careers.  In the short time he was president, he was moving in the directin of reform and civil rights for blacks.
