    The FCC only controls the broadcast airspace, because that is seen as a public resource which is owned by us all, licensed (not sold) and regulated for the common benefit. The FCC has no jurisdiction over non-broadcast media, such as cable, which does not license or use the public broadcast spectrum.

    But non-broadcast media is by far the majority these days. So reinstating the Fairness Doctrine would have little effect on the actual content that most people see and hear.

    Yes, it would have something more of an effect on right wing radio. But as the Flush Rush diaries have documented here, right wing radio is beginning to collapse of its own weight anyway. So, while that's arguably the place it's needed most, in the long term it's not really needed there either.

    So you are right, and reinstating the Fairness Doctrine is kind of a red herring.
