  •  somehow, I don't think your neighbor (23+ / 0-)

is an owner, but a lackey.
The owners?  scared? they're in their own world, with this being a minor issue.

    •  Yes, no attack dog, but a running dog. (0+ / 0-)

I ♥ President Obama and have his back.
Hands off SocSec, Medicare and Medicaid. NO subsidies to rich Corps.

    •  They're scared enough to be rousing up their (27+ / 0-)

lackeys.  The average joe wouldn't be thinking this way on their own - if they weren't being fed the steady diet by the rich's mouthpieces like Limbaugh and Faux news, etc.  The rich might be in their own world, but this is no minor issue to them.  It's a war they've been fighting and were winning resoundingly for a long time.  They sense it's turning - in fact, some of them are terrified.  It's why they're pouring literally billions of their "hard earned" money into the battle.  They still think they're going to win.  And if we don't stay focused, they still could.  Their arrogance is the best thing we have going for us.  Remember, arrogance usually is a cover for fear.

The old line of having nothing left to lose is really true.  The rich have a lot to lose and they live in constant fear of losing it.  They just don't quite recognize yet that their greed will be what ends up losing them the most.  You truly can only push people so far. Leave them so little to lose that they no longer have any fear and all bets are off.

They don't realize that the middle class that once existed was their safety net.  It provided a huge group who had quite a lot to lose that they didn't want to give up.  That could always be counted on to be the good lackeys.  In fact, they didn't even need to infuse them with the hate and anger and fear they're now having to create because there were so many of them.

But as their greed has decimated that group, there are more and more people who have nothing left to lose.  I'm not talking about open rebellion, because we're not anywhere close to the point of having the huge numbers with virtually nothing left to lose.  I'm talking about something much less overt, but something as potentially devastating to them.  I'm talking people deciding the crumbs they choose to spread to those who help make them rich aren't enough and so people are just going to quit helping them.

As people struggle working at Walmart for a minimum wage that does not enable them to put food on the table for their children, to get medical care for themselves and their kids, to provide a decent roof over their heads, and they have to rely on handouts just to survive, while the Walmart owners are getting rich off their work and then degrading them and demeaning them for taking the handouts that allow them to barely survive - what if they just say no.  No, I can't make it this way and so I'll quit helping make you rich and I'll just take the handouts.  I'll be in the same spot, but you won't be.  I have nothing to lose, but you do.

The rich are trying to take away that option.  They're trying to make people reliant on them even for those handouts.  They want to set it up so the government doesn't provide the handouts, instead it will only be the rich who have enough to do it.  So they can decide who's "worthy" of them.  And of course it will only be those who are willing to accept their crumbs in order to make them rich who they will consider worthy.

That's why they're fighting so hard right now.  If they can't make certain the homeless, the unemployed, the poor, are totally reliant on them, they won't be able to force the rest of the population to accept the crumbs they chose to give, because the rest of the population will see that refusing to work to make them rich will lose them nothing.  If they can make certain the option to working for crumbs is to not be able to survive, then we'll still have something to lose.

They realize it and they're fighting it hard.  And they're working hard to make sure they have lots of lackeys out there supporting them.  And they're fighting because they're scared.  Because they have a hell of a lot to lose.

      •  When are the lackeys not scared? (11+ / 0-)

When Bush was president they were afraid of terrorists, afraid of political dissent, afraid of Hillary Clinton, shit - W's entire administration was one big national fear-fest.  These guys are always afraid and always looking for something to blame their fears on.

        •  I think there didn't used to be (4+ / 0-)

so many who were afraid.  There have always been some. Before and during the Civil Rights Movement.  The "moral majority" was the beginning of the current fear movement.  It was ramped up by Rove and Cheney, Limbaugh and Beck, etc.  I don't believe we've had it ramped up to the level it is now at least since the Civil Rights Movement.  Not the numbers or the level.

There are certain personalities that are inherently fearful and are indeed looking for something to be fearful of.  I don't think it's always been that those people have been so taken advantage of as has been the case in the last few decades.

          •  Well, if you're going with "50 years ago people (0+ / 0-)

were such frightful cowards", that is before my time so I can't say much.  I can point out that 50-60 years ago, lynchings were common, as were segregated drinking fountains, seating areas, you name it.  I'm not sure it can be considered "brave" to be terrified of drinking out of the same fountain as black person, seems rather cowardly to me.

    •  Most of the Confederate dead were (5+ / 0-)

mere lackeys. They owned no slaves of their own. They died for a wretched cause which was not even in their own interest. They are not to be honored but pitied.
