    •  Stonewall (Riots) were in Greenich Village, NY. (7+ / 0-)

1968:  (prior to Stonewall) Police routinely busted into gay bars, beat and intimidated patrons, arrested people, published their names, etc, etc, etc.

Just all out state-oppression of gay people.

Not just one, but an on-going set of disturbances, protests and fighting back against police brutality and oppression began June 28, 1968 at the Stonewall Inn in NY.

The patrons of the bar, and residents of Greenich Village in general, fought back rather than meekly submitting.  Throwing coins turned into throwing bottles, etc, etc.

Following that night, continued community organizing and protests emerged not only within NY but around the country.

It is "gay civil rights day" in a way...   That's why most cities have their GLBT pride parades around the end of June, if not on the 28th itself.

      -- short version --

"The law is meant to be my servant and not my master, still less my torturer and my murderer." -- James Baldwin. July 11, 1966.
