    movement to liberate ourselves from the royalism and its tiered class system of the 18th century?

      conservative,  propertied men usurping other propertied men for economic control of vast riches.

      But the ideas at the time, were really pretty close to the cutting edge of political thought and certainly political practice of major nation states in existence then.  We really were an experiment in trying to create a modern democratic (democratic republican) state. Just the outright rejection of the birthright of some to rule in favor of electing all rulers was a major change in how the source of the right to govern was considered.

      That we may have failed along the way in some particularly spectacular ways and instances doesn't change that we were a departure from past practices, creation of new institutions, an experiment, the very definition of not conservative.
